IPATA Policy: Sedatives
Updated – March 3, 2025
IPATA does not recommend giving tranquilizers or sedatives to any pet when they travel by air. Sedation can suppress cardiovascular, respiratory and body temperature regulation and has other, potentially negative effects on the animal's physiology.
IPATA does, however, support the reduction of fear, anxiety and stress during air travel by utilizing alternatives to sedation including:
1. Crate training (using non-aversive methods) in advance so that the pet will be more comfortable during travel.
2. The use of nutraceutical and pheromone products as well as diets that have independent, peer reviewed evidence for reducing fear, anxiety and stress.
3. Judicious use of non-sedating anti-anxiety medications under veterinary guidance and prescription.
